Animal & Biological Sciences
Breeding Beef: This is a heifer born in the previous year and is approximately 1 1/2 years old at State Fair and are breeding age.
Market Beef: These cattle would also be around 1 1/2 years old but you are showing these as if you will be harvesting them in the near future.
NOT 4-H Classes in South Dakota
Futurity Heifer: born in the current year and could be shown in 4-H the following year.
Futurity Bull: born in the current year
Feeder Calves: would be shown in 4-H the following year as a market animal
Also remember you can always enter a display exhibit to be judged to enter in this project area at the fair.
These are animals that are members pets, such as, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hedgehogs, frogs, lizards, unshowable rabbits, and other.
This is a contest held at the South Dakota State Fair that challenges the kids knowledge about their animal and their industry.
Dairy Goats
These are you milking goats. Please check your breeds carefully and make sure you are in the correct project area.
Dog
Get ready to teach your dog obedience, have fun with agility, practice rally runs, and your showmanship skills. There is an extra handbook for this project area.
Horse
This project will test your horsemanship skills! Check with your local extension office for the Horse Project Handbook and try to find a learning or practice day to attend.
Meat Goat
Meat goats are always changing to check each year to verify you know the rules. Wether dams, breeding goats, or market goats.
Poultry & Eggs
All poultry are welcome!!!! Ducks, geese, guinea, turkeys, pigeons, doves... everything is welcome. Maybe let your poultry committee know if you plan to bring a very large or very small bird or provide your own cage at the county fair.
Youth-in-Action: Poultry Skill-a-thon
Skill-a-thon meant to test the members knowledge about all types of birds such as breeds, eggs, body parts, etc.
Rabbit
There are so many breeds and this project can be completed in a fairly small area, like a garage.
Youth-in-Action: Rabbit Skill-a-thon
A skill-a-thon to test the knowledge about all things rabbits. Members should be able to identify breeds in all colors and answer common rabbit information and breed specific information. This will help develop the next generation of judges.
Sheep & Wool
Do you have sheep? Here is you project area. All types of sheep are welcome!!!
Swine
It is hard to find pigs out of confinement these days however there are quite a few breeders out there selling show pigs. If you need some help looking for one please contact your local extension office or you can send us an email and we cna try to help you.
Youth-in-Action: Livestock Sill-a-thon
This will test members on all things livestock. This is a handwritten test that the members can take at the South Dakota State Fair to challenge their knowledge on sheep, swine, goats, and beef.
